Information on Skydiving in California

Whether you've thought about skydiving in the past, or you're suddenly struck with curiosity about flying, there's no better time to find out more. Parachuting is defined as the process of skydiving out of an airplane and coasting slightly to the earth. While it may feel like flying, skydiving is a bit different. The degree of security provided by having a parachute is the predominate difference. Your chute slows down your descent, not only making your freefall safer, but also supplying you with a stunning canopy tour thousands of feet in the air!

They call the first jump a "tandem skydive", due to the presence of a skydive instructor. Your tandem instructor will be with you the entire time! This gives you the opportunity to focus more on the scenery as opposed to focusing on saving your own life. Once your free fall is over, the instructor will launch your parachute providing a stunning glide before a safe touchdown.

So just how high will you be when you jump?

The airplane has to reach an elevation of 10,000 to 14,000 feet before you can exit. That means, you will be diving from almost 3 miles above the ground! This height cap is in place for your safety, any higher and you would need an oxygen mask to jump!

You'll be instructed on how each of your parachutes are handled before you leave the ground.

If your main parachute malfunctions, the second will spring into action. The back up parachute NEVER fails. It is launched using what is known as a AAD or automatic activation device that detects a low altitude without the main parachute and instantly deploys to enable your safe landing. Often in professional training, skydivers can practice and learn the release times of a parachute while being tethered to the airplane. This method of parachute instruction is referred to as "Static line jumping" and is similar to bungee jumping, but you are high in the air as opposed to on a stationary structure.

Aircraft Commonly Used In Skydiving

Lighter planes are the most commonly used in skydives. Aside from recreational sport use, light aircraft are excellent for freight transport and aerial photography. Nevertheless, light sport aircraft predominately are used for jumping as they are much faster than commercial airplanes, often taking a load of excited jumpers up every 15 to 20 minutes!

It can take in between 10 and 20 minutes to reach jumping altitude, depending on the plane. Unsurprisingly, the size of the engine determines how quick it gets up to this point. The much faster planes, like the King Airs with PT6A-20 engines, are regarded as the fastest in the world in their ascent.

Not only do these particular aircraft ascend swiftly, they can carry up to 15 people. {The King Airs, however, are only the second most popular aircraft used for diving.} The most popular twin and solo engine planes for skydivers are the Havilland Canada DHC-6-Twin Otter, and the Pacific Aerospace PAC P-750 XSTOL, respectively. Whether piston-powered or turbine-powered, aircraft optimized for skydivers have wide doors. Turbine and piston-powered planes are separated by a key difference: turbine planes are lighter in weight and use their fuel more efficiently. While they supply a similar horsepower as a typical piston engine, crafts with turbine engines are typically more expensive.
